Inventory #: 62116-1
Model: 1868 Trapdoor
New / Used: Used
This Springfield rifle began it's career as an 1863 percussion muzzle loading rifle. With the advent of trapdoor breech loading rifles the government converted some of the 1863 riflesfrom .58 caliber muzzleloaders to .50/70 breech loading rifles. A few years later, the U. S. Army began using the newly manufactured 1873 trapdoor rifles in .45/70. These conversions are fairly uncommon in this condition.
This rifle is in above average condition. The stock is solid with what appears to be original finsh and patina; plenty of small dings and some light scratches as one would expect. Several inspection cartouches are clearly visible on the stock along with what might be a rack number. The barrel, receiver, and other metal parts are bright with characteristic patina. The bore is strong with good lands and grooves and some scattered areas of pitting.
The butt plate is marked "U.S." and both barrel bands are "U" marked. Center fire breechloader, two bands, two sling swivels, standard sliding sight, and standard ramrod. Lock is marked with an eagle and U.S. SPRINGFIELD, manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield Massachusetts, and is marked 1863 on the tail of the lock plate and 1870 on the front of the breech.
Included is an original bayonet as shown in pictures
