This is a steel drop in auto sear. It allows an AR-15 style rifle with M16 lower parts and bolt carrier to have select-fire capability.

The benefits for a law enforcement agency are two-fold:

First, this allows an agency to purchase less select-fire M-16 style carbines and rifles, and instead they can acquire AR-15 rifles and use the drop in auto sear for tactical applications where select fire capability is needed. The problem some Departments have with post 86 machineguns is multi-faceted. In particular when such firearms are no longer needed or are obsolete, they are typically cut up per ATF regulations and the Department receives only nominal value, if any at all, for spare parts. Disposal requires therefore a significant expense and a financial loss for the agency. With the drop in auto sear, rifles which are simply standard AR-15 firearms without the device, can be disposed of by being sold to officers or even civilians, and the Department can retain more of the value in the process. Further, because only the auto sear is the registered machinegun and not the rifle to which it is utilized, the use of this device and swapping it out between firearms as needed reduces the administrative burden that would otherwise exist to the agency.

Secondly, in feedback we have heard from law enforcement officers, the use of this type of device by a Department solves another problem. In smaller agencies it is not always possible for patrolmen to have a select fire weapon due to cost. Often officers must contribute funds to the Department budget themselves in order for adequate firearms to be acquired by their agency. The problem is that when the officer leaves that agency or retires, they suffer the financial loss of that particular firearm, since they cannot be possessed by civilians, including former law enforcement officers. The result is that officers often go without adequate equipment and this can put the public at risk, as well as the officer. This device can help alleviate the problem by allowing for the Department to own this device as the registered machinegun, and then officers can furnish or use their own civilian-legal firearms with the device assigned to them as needed and appropriate for their duties. Then when the officer leaves or retires, they do not suffer the financial loss that might otherwise occur.

Please note that because not all AR-15 platforms are completely identical sometimes minor adjustments and the removal of material from the rifle's internal pocket or the DIAS may be required to ensure a proper fit. DIAS devices are made a little larger than necessary for all applications so that material can be removed without compromising the unit.
