Springfield Armory brought out the SOCOM 16 in 2004 as a .30 caliber rifle short and quick enough for close work. It's built on the M1A platform, so it has the M14 style operating system and handling, and it's only 37.25" overall.

The 16.25" carbon steel barrel has six grooves and a 1:11" twist. It ends in Springfield's small proprietary muzzle brake, which cuts down recoil and muzzle rise from 7.62x51mm. Up front is an XS post with a tritium insert, and the rear is a large .135" ghost ring aperture that adjusts in MOA for elevation and windage, so it stays fast on target in low light.

The forward scout style Picatinny rail is set up for compact red dots and long eye relief scopes. The trigger is a two-stage National Match tuned unit, and the black composite stock keeps the classic M1A lines and holds up to weather and rough handling.

It comes with one 10-round magazine and a Springfield heavy-duty padded rifle case with a muzzle protector.
