What's Included

  • Remington Model 31 20ga shotgun

The Model 31 was Remington’s direct competitor to the venerable Winchester Model 12. Introduced in 1931, this model gained the moniker “ball-bearing repeater”, which this example typifies beautifully. Typical of the era, this model features an all-steel receiver and hand-fit internals that provide exceedingly smooth, easy operation. Ultimately, the Model 31 was discontinued in 1949, and would be replaced by the legendary Remington 870. This particular example is chambered in desirable 20ga, with a fixed Modified choke.

Traditional American craftsmanship is on full display in this piece. A high-quality milled receiver and smaller parts typify a bygone era of manufacturing. The Model 31 features a layout typical of modern repeating shotguns, with a pump action, push-button safety, and slide release, along with the typical underbarrel magazine tube. The serial number and matching barrel’s code indicate this gun as being made in 1947, making this a late production example.

This specific gun is in Excellent condition. This appears to be the Field grade, based on the standard barrel. The steel receiver and other metal parts show limited wear and handling marks, such as nicks, dings, and scratches as might be found on a nearly 80-year-old gun. The action of this gun appears to be in good working order. The barrel features expected factory rollmarks indicating its caliber of 3 ½”, manufacture, etc. The fitted choke has three notches, indicating Modified.

The shotgun’s furniture is factory standard, and is rated as similarly in Excellent condition, with a satin finish. The wood stock and forend show no signs of cracking or splitting, although nicks and dings, and scratches are noted. The stock has a plastic buttplate fitted, which has white material in its grooves. The buttplate appears to be in one piece.

This shotgun is a wonderful example of the desirable subguage 31s, showing very light wear for its age. It remains in Excellent condition, suitable for a place in the collection of any shotgunner or hunter looking for something a little different from today’s aluminum and stamped guns.
