The Taurus 856 is a compact small-frame double-action/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special and rated for +P loads. Its standout feature is a six-round cylinder in a package sized like many five-shot snubnoses, measuring roughly 6.55 inches overall with a 2-inch barrel, 4.8 inches in height, and 1.41 inches wide. Unloaded steel-frame versions weigh about 22 ounces. A transfer-bar safety keeps the firing pin blocked until the trigger is pulled. Sights are a fixed rear notch and serrated ramp front sight. Soft rubber grips aid control, while the exposed hammer allows deliberate single-action shots. Designed primarily for concealed carry and personal defense, the 856 handles mild .38 Special loads comfortably and remains reliable with defensive ammunition. Variants include lighter Ultra-Lite aluminum-frame models, 3-inch Defender versions, optics-ready TORO models, and premium Executive Grade guns. It offers practical capacity, manageable size, and straightforward operation at an accessible price.
