The FN 509 MRD (Miniature Red Dot) is the optics-ready version of FN America's popular striker-fired 9mm pistol platform. The most common commercial models are the Compact MRD and Midsize MRD.


The FN 509 Compact MRD pairs a 3.7-inch cold hammer-forged stainless steel barrel (recessed target crown, polished chamber and feed ramp) with an overall length of 6.8 inches, unloaded weight of 25.5 oz, and width of 1.35 inches. Height is roughly 4.8-5.2 inches depending on the magazine. It ships with 12- and 15-round magazines (10-round versions available where restricted) and accepts higher-capacity FN 509 magazines with sleeves.


Its defining feature is the patented FN Low-Profile Optics Mounting System, which uses adapter plates for direct mounting of more than 10 popular miniature red-dot optics while allowing co-witness with the included all-black iron sights. Fully ambidextrous controls, aggressive front-and-rear slide serrations, external extractor with loaded-chamber indicator, enhanced grip texturing, interchangeable backstraps, a MIL-STD-1913 rail, and a flatter-faced trigger (typically 5.5-7.7 lb) complete the package.
