1993 Browning BLR 81L 7mm Rem Magnum Lever-Action Rifle, 24” Barrel, All Steel, Pre-Lightning

This Browning BLR is a lever-action rifle chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum. This is the desirable pre-Lightning configuration with an all-steel receiver and was made by Miroku in Japan. All factory rollmarks are present, indicating its country of origin as well as caliber designations and the like.

Condition

Overall Condition: Like New condition, showing only essentially no signs of prior use. The action appears to be in excellent working order.

Bore Condition: Excellent – clean, mirror finish, no signs of wear.

Furniture condition: Like New – essentially no wear, nicks, or dings on the stock or forend.

Specific Condition Notes: Rubber buttpad is soft and pliable. Gold trigger shows essentially no wear.

Browning BLR 7mm Rem Mag rifle

The Browning BLR came about from the desire to fire modern pointed rifle rounds through a fast-handling lever-action rifle. As such, it features a detachable box magazine instead of the usual underbarrel tube magazine. Beginning production in the 1960s, the model underwent modifications in 1981, giving the Model 81, and the 81L (long action) came out in 1991. Instead of a toggle or similar action, the BLR uses a rack-and-pinion to drive a bolt that locks into a barrel extension, much like the AR series of rifles, therefore allowing the use of much higher pressure rifle rounds, such as 7mm Remington Magnum which this piece uses. Browning has since ceased production of all 7mm Rem Mag BLR’s, making this item rather unusual.

Like most Browning guns, this BLR is very handsome, featuring a high-gloss blued finish, a glass-like finish on the furniture, and a gold-colored trigger. Despite the gun’s age, this rifle looks like it left the shop yesterday, with barely any signs of having been made over 30 years ago. Additionally, being made in 1993, this example is of the pre-Lightning type, which means its receiver is made of solid steel instead of the later aluminum. While heavier, this tames the recoil of the 7mm Rem Mag round, and many collectors feel it to be even smoother cycling than its later aluminum iterations.

The action of this BLR is in Like New condition. The action cycles extremely smoothly thanks to its rack-and-pinion gear system, and its 3-round detachable box magazine slides in and out with ease. The rifle features an external hammer with a spur that folds forward when in the half-cock position – this both reduces snagging and rests the hammer on the bolt carrier instead of the firing pin. The rifle’s bolt carrier is fluted to match its multi-lug rotating bolt. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped for straightforward optics mounting, and features serrations to eliminate glare.

The rifle’s 24” barrel is factory standard. It features a fine front blade sight with brass bead and a finely adjustable rear tangent sight. The bore is in Like New condition with no wear noted. The crown is in similar condition.

The rifle’s furniture is factory standard, with a beautiful walnut stock and forend. Both feature high-quality checkering and a deep, high-gloss finish. The stock has a traditional straight wrist and a rubber buttpad which still feels as soft and supple as it did in 1993. The forend features a barrel band to keep it secure. Both front and rear sling swivel studs are present.

These pre-Lightning BLR’s are not easy to find, much less in the now-discontinued 7mm Rem Mag caliber, and to be in such outstanding condition makes this rifle a collector’s piece. Its handsome appearance plus Browning toughness makes this rifle sure to serve for many years to come – make this piece yours before it’s gone!
