Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield X 9mm 3.6in Optics-Ready Pistol with Thumb Safety — New In Box

The Shield X is what happens when Smith & Wesson stops treating the Shield as a compromise. It keeps the slim carry profile — 6.87 inches overall, 20.8 ounces — but stretches the grip to take a 13-round magazine, with a 15-rounder also in the box. That is full-size capacity in a pistol you can still carry inside the waistband.

This is the thumb-safety configuration. The slide is cut for an optic and wears aggressive serrations front and rear, the trigger is flat-faced, the front sight is LumiGreen, and the magazine catch is reversible for left-handed shooters. Barrel is 3.6 inches with a 1-in-10 twist, finished in black Armornite over a stainless slide.

Thirteen Rounds In A Shield

The original Shield asked you to accept seven or eight rounds for the sake of a thin gun. The X keeps the width and adds a longer grip, so you get thirteen in the flush magazine and fifteen in the extended one that also ships with it. For anyone who liked how a Shield carried but wanted the capacity of a compact, this is that pistol.

The Thumb Safety Version

This one has the manual thumb safety. Smith & Wesson sell the same pistol without it, so if you specifically want a carry gun with a thumb safety — or your range, your training or your preference requires one — this is the configuration to buy. It is the only external difference between the two.
