The World War II German Eastern Front Medal (Medaille „Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42“), widely known as the Ostmedaille or grimly nicknamed the "Frozen Meat Medal" (Gefrierfleischorden), was instituted by Adolf Hitler in May 1942 to honor service during the brutal Russian winter campaign.

History and Criteria

• Inaction/Service Period: Awarded for service on the Eastern Front between November 15, 1941, and April 15, 1942. 

• Qualification Requirements: 14 days of combat experience, 60 days of non-combat service in the operational zone, suffering a combat wound, or severe frostbite. 

• Design: Features a German steel helmet and a hand grenade on the obverse, with an eagle holding a swastika and laurel branch on the reverse, surrounded by text.
