The Mossberg Model 42M(a) is a bolt-action .22 LR produced between 1944 and 1945.     

The "M" in the 42M series designates the Mannlicher-style stock. The 42M line was closely related to the British Lease-Lend training rifles. During World War II, America supplied thousands of 42M variants to Great Britain for use by the Home Guard. The 42M(a) is recognized as one of the hardest-to-find variations because of its short production window at the end of the war.
