- Origins: It was designed in 1884 by the Marlin Firearms Co. (often called the .32-40 Ballard) and later chambered by Winchester. It was one of the two original chamberings for the iconic Winchester Model 1894 rifle.
- Performance: Originally a black powder cartridge, it fired a lead projectile (typically 165 to 180 grains) at a velocity of around 1,400 to 1,600 feet per second.
