The Dead Air Sandman X is a compact, hard-use .30 caliber suppressor built from Haynes 282 using additive manufacturing (3D printing) and rated for cartridges up to .300 Remington Ultra Magnum with a 4,200 ft-lb energy ceiling. It is full-auto rated with no barrel length restrictions. The Sandman X is available in two configurations: the Xeno variant (6.4 inches, 14.5 oz) and the KeyMo variant (6.9 inches, 16.8 oz). Both use a HUB 1.375x24 rear interface for compatibility with the full range of Dead Air and HUB-standard mounting systems. The Sandman X was recognized as the Shoot On 2025 Excellence Award recipient

What Makes the Dead Air Sandman X Different?

The Sandman X is the tenth-anniversary evolution of the Sandman series and the first Sandman suppressor built using additive manufacturing. That distinction matters beyond marketing. Traditional suppressor manufacturing relies on machining and welding, which place hard limits on internal geometry and introduce potential failure points at weld seams. Additive manufacturing removes those constraints. The result is a monolithic Haynes 282 body with internal architectures that are impossible to produce through conventional methods.

Haynes 282 is a nickel-based superalloy developed for aerospace applications, specifically for environments involving extreme heat, pressure, and thermal cycling. It offers a combination of high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, and fatigue resistance that standard 17-4 PH stainless steel cannot match. Dead Air chose this material for the Sandman X after using it successfully on the Lazarus 6. The result is a suppressor body capable of handling full-auto fire and extreme firing schedules without the structural fatigue concerns associated with welded stainless construction.

Inside the Sandman X are two patent-pending Triskelion baffles and three cone baffles, surrounded by the Triskelion Gas Management System. This design does three things simultaneously: it reduces peak sound pressure at both the muzzle and the shooter's ear, it directs propellant gases out the front of the suppressor to substantially eliminate muzzle flash, and it minimizes back-pressure to the host firearm's operating system, reducing gas blowback, bolt carrier group wear, and felt recoil impulse. Patents 20230228513 and 11441867B2 cover this architecture.

Dead Air Sandman X Sound Performance

Dead Air conducts sound testing per MIL-STD-1474E using a Hottinger Brüel and Kjær Impulse Noise Evaluation Kit. These results are produced by Dead Air's engineering team under conservative measurement conditions, not third-party or media testing.

Verified Sandman X sound test results:

  • Mk18, 5.56 NATO, 10.3" barrel: 142 dB at muzzle / 139 dB at ear
  • AR15, 5.56 NATO, 16" barrel: 141 dB at muzzle / 138 dB at ear
  • AR10, 7.62 NATO, 16" barrel: 143 dB at muzzle / 141 dB at ear
  • Bolt action, 7.62 NATO, 24" barrel: 140 dB at muzzle / 139 dB at ear

The at-ear figures are particularly relevant for shooters evaluating hearing safety. Dead Air designs for a balance between muzzle and at-ear performance, not just favorable muzzle readings.

Mounting System Compatibility

The Sandman X uses a HUB 1.375x24 rear interface on both the Xeno and KeyMo configurations, making it compatible with the full range of Dead Air HUB adapters and any third-party mounting system built to the HUB standard. Muzzle device torque for installation is 25 to 35 ft-lbs. Adapter torque is 25 to 30 ft-lbs.

The KeyMo system is a thread-to-taper quick-detach design with a detent clutch plate for vibration and thermal resistance. It delivers a consistent return to zero and is Dead Air's recommended choice for high-volume shooting and duty-cycle applications. The Xeno system is a left-hand-thread, thread-to-taper design optimized for precision-minded shooters who prioritize repeatability and minimal weight. The Xeno variant saves 2.3 oz compared to the KeyMo configuration.

The Sandman X is also compatible with all Dead Air R-Series front caps, allowing caliber-optimized aperture selection or flash hider cap configuration based on your host and use case.
