Springfield Armory issues serial numbers sequentially for the M1A series of rifles.  Thus as each rifle, regardless of configuration, is assigned the next-in-line serial number.  A buyer or collector can therefore take the serial number, find it in a SA serial number data base, and determine approximately when the rifle was manufactured.   If an individual calls SA Customer Support with the S/N, the exact month and year of manufacture will be provided.
