1978 Colt Detective Special, DEEP MIRROR NICKEL, looks like 1970s acrylic custom grips, could maybe high speed buff out. Beautiful late 1970s piece, they don't make them like that any more.
The Colt Detective Special is a double-action/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special. This model features a six-shot swing-out cylinder and compact frame configuration typical of Colt’s small-frame revolvers. The frame and barrel are finished in nickel, giving the revolver a bright reflective surface. The grip material and color are listed as nonstandard, noted as “other,” and the revolver retains the traditional Colt design with a shrouded ejector rod and ramp-style front sight introduced during the third production series.
The third series of the Detective Special, produced from 1973 through 1986, incorporated several design refinements compared to earlier versions. The barrel was redesigned with an extended shroud that enclosed and protected the ejector rod, and the front sight was modified to a full ramp configuration for improved durability. Internal lockwork was also updated during this period to enhance mechanical consistency, while the frame and cylinder dimensions remained compact for concealed carry applications. Nickel-finished variants, such as this one, were produced in limited numbers within the series run, LATER forth series Colt started stainless finish instead of Nickel.
Factory grips introduced during the third series covered the front strap of the frame, differing from the exposed frame design of earlier models.
