The U.S. Springfield Model 1884 "Trapdoor" rifle is a single-shot, breech-loading rifle, chambered in .45-70 Government, known for its distinctive hinged breechblock that pivoted open like a trapdoor for loading, improving upon earlier models with features like the advanced Buffington rear sight for better accuracy the raised leaf had graduations from 200 to 1,400 yds, a robust walnut stock, and a design allowing higher pressure cartridges, serving as the standard infantry arm before being replaced in the late 1890's
It was the culmination of the "Trapdoor" design, improving the well-known Model 1873 with better sights for increased military effectiveness.
It saw extensive service with the U.S. Army, representing the standard infantry rifle for a significant period.
