Moore’s Patent Firearms Company was founded by Daniel Moore, who was a very creative inventor. Prior to the Civil War he started producing a .32 Cal seven shot revolver and he patented it in 1860. This pistol was very popular among soldiers going to war and over 7,000 were produced. This was the very first swing cylinder revolver every made. This gun was sturdy and reliable and was chambered in the same .32 Cal copper-cased cartridge as Smith & Wesson. His design violated Rollin White’s bored-through cylinder patent that was used by Smith & Wesson. In 1862 he was sued and lost and had to turn over 3,376 guns to the competitor and had to stamp “Manfd for Smith & Wesson by Moore’s Pat. Fire Arms Co. on the barrel. In 1866, the company changed its name to National Firearms Company and was bought by Colt in 1870. This gun is a good example of one of the guns that was turned over to Smith & Wesson and is a very cool piece of history.
