The .38 Special was the standard service cartridge for the majority of United States police departments from the 1920s to the 1990s. It was also a common sidearm cartridge used by United States military. This was my father-in laws duty weapon in a NH police force.  I have never fired it upon getting this from family after he died. Serial number seems to show manufactor in 1969-1970. 6-shot 4 Inch
