I have a stock that came off of an M1 carbine Iver Johnson "D-Day Anniversary" special.  It is in very good condition and does not have any gouges or cracks anywhere in the wood.  I took it off and put a paratrooper stock on the M1 carbine.  This was wrapped up in a blanket and stored away.  I think the wood is a birch and it has the laser engraving of the D-day anniversary on the rear area of the stock.
