While much controversial of late, this cartridge is used for sporting purpose and bears an ATF US law exclusion from the definition of Armored Piercing ammunition, which allows for Government overruns to be sold the public. However, just a year or two ago it was said that executives using the Lake City military ammunition plant that civilian sales would be discontinued, however its hard to say if that actually was considered or impacted sales. One thing for sure was in 2015 everyone was pretty sure the ATF was going to remove the armored piercing exemption and "green tips" would effectively be out of production/banned for civilians.
