1881 Marlin Rifle chambered in 38-55 caliber and wearing an Octagon barrel. Gun was engraved by Al Kontout after it left the factory. Al Kontout is favorably mentioned in Larry Wilson’s Book “Winchester Engraving” 1975 1st Edition Page 360 and is said to have studied under Winchester engravers, quickly mastering the art, as is evident on this gun. D.O.M. Is 1887 . Beautiful panel engraved scenes that tell a story, left panel depicts a pioneer fighting a charging Grizzly Bear with a knife. Right panel shows a wary Trophy Buck as a distant hunter takes aim from a far hilltop. Both scenes are are bordered by elegant Louis D.Nimschke style scroll work. Deep sculpture cut engravings that are case colored in contrast to polished Blued finish of barrel and edges of receiver. Finely hand checkered and scene carved wood in great condition. Case colored butt plate , hammer, and lever action. Rifle remains in excellent condition with smooth tight action and shiny bore with strong rifling. A crowning piece in any collection of fine American rifles.
