When choosing the right barrel for your AR you want to first consider the purpose. Is it a build meant to be used in close quarters or that needs to be small and portable? If so you probably want to consider a shorter barrel. Something in the 7.5" - 9.5" range. At these close distances, we find that .300 BLK and 9mm does really well and .223/5.56 is also quite effective.

If you are looking to build more of an all-around AR for use in a variety of combat situations clsoe to mid-range then 10.5" - 12.5" barrels are popular. Depending on the cartridge and optics used, this barrel length will help you to effectivelty engage targets from close range all the way out to 250-300 yards and possibly further.

For a RECCE or Recon style build, 14.5" - 16" barrels are the way to go. The RECCE configuration is considered to be a true do everything type of build. Usually paired with a Low Power Variable Optic, these rifles are capable of engaging targets from 25 - 400 yards or more. For long range or competition applications a longer barrel 18" - 24" is ideal. This longer barrel allows projectiles to make the most of the powder and generates higher velocities. If your build is for dedicated bench or precision shooting at long ranges then you may want to consider 6.5 Grendel, .224 Valkyrie or even 6.8 SPC. Competition shooters typically like a 16-18" barrel with a medium to light profile for quick target aquisition and easy off-hand shooting.
