This listing is for a Smith & Wesson, 38 Safety Third Model DA, 38 S&W, 3¼-inch Barrel with original hard rubber grips. Serial number - 528XX. The last Patent date is 1885. There is Script engraving on the right side and some plating on the cylinder and removable side plate. 


38 Safety Third Model D.A. Revolver. Made 1890-1898; total run of about 73,500.


38 S&W caliber, 5-shot fluted cylinder, 3¼”, 4”, 5” and 6” barrels.


Checkered hard rubber grips with S&W monogram impression. Blued or nickel plated finish.


Serial numbering continued from the 38 Safety Second Model, from 42484 – 116002. Company name and address barrel marking, with patent dates 1880, 1883,1885, 1887,1888, 1889 and 1890.


Major evolutionary differences between the Second and Third Model revolvers are: Barrel release catch fitted into and protruded from the rear section of the top strap and is pushed downward to function; frame contour in that area altered accordingly; the trigger contour was changed at top front and a pin was added to the trigger guard. Other changes primarily internal in nature were also made.
