In 1925 Winchester introduced a .30-06 case necked down to a bullet diameter which until then never had been used any British or other European manufacturer: .277. The result was to become one of the most popular hunting cartridges in the world. When introduced it offered better long range performance than any other available big game cartridge. It was the favorite of the late gunwriter Jack OConnor who through his writing popularized the .270 everywhere in the English speaking parts of the world. In Europe it also became widely used, but met heavy competition from the many popular 6,5mm cartridges and especially the 7x64 Brenneke. Over here it was never called by its metric designation - 6,9x64 - but kept its American name of .270 Winchester.

The success of the .270 was undoubtedly partly due to fact that it has a combination of a flat trajectory and a very manageable recoil with the standard 130 grain bullet. At normal hunting ranges a well placed bullet from a .270 means instant death to all species up to the size of mule deer, and many hunters prefer it for mountain hunting as respectable muzzle velocities and equivalent trajectories can be had from a 22 or even a 20 barrel.

Whether the .270 is an elk cartridge or not has been discussed endlessly, but hunters who do intend to use the .270 Win. on these species are recommended to use bullets in the 150-160 grain range in order to ensure sufficient penetration. With 100 grain bullets the .270 is also a fine varmint cartridge, although not intended to be when originally designed.

Introduced as late as 1963 this cartridge was soon to become the most popular in the line of .300 magnums. Unlike the predecessors .458, .264 and .338 Winchester Magnums it has a longer case and a rather short neck (.264) in order to increase the case capacity. As a rule of thumb the neck of a cartridge should be equal to the caliber or preferably a little longer, but experience has shown that the .300 Win. Mag. has not really suffered in this respect. It can still be used in a standard-length bolt action but this means that the heavier bullets must be seated rather deep and hereby occupy some of the powder space. Like the other .300 magnums it is at its best for hunting larger species like moose or elk at long range. The recoil is heavy, but most shooters will be able to handle it after some practice and handloads with lighter bullets are a good choice for this purpose.

The 7mm-08 is nothing but the .308 Winchester necked down to 7 mm or .284. This wildcat was adopted by Remington in 1980.

The 7mm-08 is closely connected with metallic silhouette shooting. This sport has a Mexican origin and the trick is to knock down animal-shaped targets made of iron plate. The targets are placed from standing between 100 and up to 500 meters from the riflemen. The shooting is done off-hand. Accordingly the demands for a metallic silhouette cartridge were all met by developing the 7mm-08. It has a high precision potential, a flat trajectory, a light recoil and sufficient power to knock over the silhouette even when hit at the extreme range.

The case capacity of the 7mm-08 is slightly smaller than in the 7x57, and accordingly the muzzle velocity of the heavier bullets will be 100-150 fps. less than in the Mauser design.

For hunting purposes this cartridge is well-suited to medium game at long range and therefore also a popular choice for light-weight mountain rifles as it works well in short actions.
